“LDS Church History comes alive for me when…”

…I hear the stories of people enduring and overcoming their trials as they joined the early church and were forced to move from place to place, often with little more than the love they shared of the gospel with family and friends. Several weeks ago in sacrament meeting I was listening to one of the young women talking about her experiences on the stake pioneer trek. Each of the youth “walked” for a pioneer. She told us the story of the woman she walked for, Hannah Evans Bowen. Widowed, Hannah left her home in Wales and was traveling across the plains with her daughter Ann. After a good family friend Thomas’ infant daughter and wife died, Hannah let his two sons, Joseph and Hyrum, travel the trail with her. Thomas, you see, was blind, and without the aid of his wife he couldn’t adequately take care of his boys. During the early winter storms Hannah would wrap the boys in her skirts to keep them warm. She suffered severe frostbite, but they all kept their lives. When they reached the Salt Lake Valley Hannah became a housekeeper for the boys father, Thomas, and later they were married. As this young woman told her story I realized that it sounded very familiar. Thomas Giles, also know as “The Blind Harpist,” is one of my ancestors. His son Hyrum, whom Hannah kept alive in the warmth of her skirts, is my great-great-grandfather.

Wow! LDS Legacy is finally a reality! We’ve been thinking for several years how we might share the Sites and Stories of the Restoration with believing Latter-day Saints around the world. So many people have wonderful spiritual experiences when they visit places like Kirtland, Far West, Nauvoo and Carthage. Visiting such places can be uplifting and faith-promoting experiences, with visitors feeling the sacrifice of the early saints and the Hand of the Lord in guiding the restoration of the gospel.

LDS Legacy has access to more than 40,000 digital images of historic sites. These places were critically important in the restoration of the gospel, the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the revelation of modern scripture, the translation of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of the Priesthood, and the shaping and development of early Church leadership.

LDS Legacy is our effort to share the images, and the stories which make these places important, with believing Latter-day Saints, and their friends, throughout the world. We hope people will be able to “virtually visit” these places, be uplifted by the Spirit, and develop a stronger testimony through their personal study of Church history.  For some, this may be the only way they will ever visit these historic sites. For others, this will be a renewing experience, helping to recall the wonderful experiences they had while walking these sites in person. In either case, we are confident that people will feel the Spirit and lives will be touched as people watch our presentations.

Our first 20 presentations are posted and available for viewing, more than 7 hours of video presentations. These initial presentations cover events from before the birth of Joseph Smith through Zion’s Camp. Our next five presentations have been written and are in various stages of production. More will be coming throughout the coming year! Your annual subscription provides access to all of our presentations, including future additions.

Bookmark this page and visit often. We’ll update everyone on presentation updates and new additions through this blog site. Stay tuned to this page. We hope you are just as excited as we are!
